end of 2009

...here we are at work on the last day of 2009, it's very hot outside (it's already past 40 degrees C) but we're comfortable inside the building and we're taking a few moments to reflect on the year that's been! Overall, it's been a great year (as you can see from the previous posts) and if we can wish for one thing next year it would be to have a year (at least) as good as this...
farewell 2009!

Christmas wrap-up

The last day of work prior to Christmas started with an all staff breakfast, some last minute work tasks and then preparations for the Christmas lunch with the Friends, volunteers and staff from Aldinga library. It was a very enjoyable end-of-year celebration - and a good time was had by all!
Merry Christmas

Santa arrives

He's arrived! That jolly old man with the white beard and bright-red suit...
you know...with the bag of presents for those who have been 'good'...
with the sleigh and reindeers...
and the Ho Ho Ho!...
yes...Santa!

aka Father Christmas; Saint Nicolas; Santa Claus; Kris Kringle; Julenisser; Tomte

Re-energizing project

Yesterday was the first day of staff delivering behaviors/actions that demonstrate their understanding of the project principles and their application... with some obviously using the tools at their disposal in 'interesting' ways!

New resources

A new set of WORLD BOOK encyclopedia have arrived, been processed and put on the shelves! (Well, they've been out for a couple of weeks now but sometimes it takes a while for me to notice...)

New badges

NEW badges have landed at the library!
...and don't they look 'spiffy'!

Electrical testing

The electrical testing has been completed at Seaford library (and the wonderful technician even fixed the blown fuse on the microwave oven). Now we are protected from any future shocking news (ptp)...

Customer satisfaction surveys

The teacher and student surveys have been completed, the data compiled and extrapolated and the results show...
it's been a very good year!
Both teacher and student satisfaction has been high and the feedback has been positive. We won't be sitting on our hands though, as the challenge now is to maintain this level (or, if possible, to improve).

Art moderation

Student art work is on display in the library for all to see...
The art moderators have been in to assess the students' work and now all library users can have a look - but the works of art will only be on display for a week.
Don't miss the opportunity...

Parenting collection

OF NOTE: late last week we set up the new parenting collection in the children's library. It's a new collection that already has a significant number of resources for those looking for 'parenting information' - and the location should be a winner...

LCD

a new LCD information screen has been installed at the service counter - and it's a stunner...
not that there was anything wrong with the previous screen, but that has now been moved to the library meeting room (where it will be installed soon).
Now we have a screen that is bigger, brighter and clearer and that can only be good news for our customers!

Sky watch

what is that huge dome inside the library?
It's the incredible Sky Watch dome.

How cool was this indoor 'stellarium'? Well, according to at least one student it was 'awesome'! Many thanks to Dean for his astronomy education and fantastic display.

Paper hand towels

no, it's not some ghostly face - it's a paper hand towel dispenser.
Finally, after many months of waiting, the dispensers have been installed in all the toilets (as have the bins). Requested by customers during the days of swine flu concerns, they have finally, FINALLY, been installed!

New courier

Our courier Keith is on leave for a month, so we now have Phil doing the job. We did have 'Johnno' for a coupe of days - but now we have Phil...

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Toilet trouble...

disaster was averted thanks to quick action taken by staff...
A person using the male toilets reported the problem. On investigation it was found that the toilet had backed-up and was close to overflowing. A call to the maintenance staff resulted in an after-hours call out and after a couple of difficulties were overcome, the problem was fixed!

Motivational tool

a new motivational tool and performance enhancer has been installed in the library work room. We will now be able to experience the phenomenal power of these 'lollipops' in delivering improved staff work performance and work outcomes through:
  • improved energy levels (sugar)
  • greater focus and efficiencies (can't talk with one or two of these suckers in your mouth)
  • greater motivation (reward)
  • higher output (more rewards)
So don't be surprised to hear our new catch-cry 'Put that in ...

Painting

painting (finally) commenced on our internal curved wall yesterday! The peeling seam tape and the 'rough spots' have been repaired and the whole wall is now getting a couple of coats of fresh paint...

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

Daylight savings...

this is the first working day with daylight savings. The clocks have all been put forward (and wasn't that a big task!). There are clocks on the lighting system, air conditioning, computers, software programs, etc, etc...
now we just have to give people time for their body clocks to adjust!

Friday, October 02, 2009

Pause to celebrate

...we took the opportunity to 'pause and celebrate' yesterday and had a get together of staff and volunteers. There was food, coffee and the opportunity to reflect on our achievements for the year!

Monday, September 28, 2009

Panda trail...

A 'pandemic' of Pandas?...is that the right description/terminology? - right or wrong, that's what we're going with for the school holidays. The Panda Trail is one of many activities at the libraries for the school holidays and is sure to be a 'winner'!

PC change over

10 PC's were changed over today - 5 service desk machines; 4 public on-line catalogues; 1 PC reservation machine. It all went smoothly and we are looking forward to PHASE 2 in November.

Monday, September 21, 2009

Last week saw the final (site) events of the Writer's Festival for 2009. Greg Holfeld talked to groups about his work as illustrator and the many books he has been involved with. They were great sessions with many participants interested in his work, his life and future projects.

Tuesday, September 08, 2009

EFTPOS

it's been a long time coming but finally, FINALLY - we have an EFTPOS service available at the library. Now our customers can pay by credit card, giving them the same convenience they have been afforded at all other commercial organizations!

Building exposes itself...

the 'inner' fluffy bits of the library building were exposed when workers took down an external facade panel. This was necessary because we wanted to know how the external panels had been fixed prior to considering how they could be replaced.
Rest assured the panel has been replaced and the building's dignity restored!

Down...but not out

No network available from the start of the day - meaning: No computers; No Phones; No WiFi; No Photocopier. Needles to say we were quiet!
Seems that something was 'fried' in the coms cabinet and it was looking pretty much like we would be down for some time. But a new power supply was found/installed and we were 'restored' a little after lunch. Not surprising that we then got a whole lot busier (for the rest of the afternoon).
We're hoping for a better day tomorrow!

Cool August night

A lovely cool (but clear) evening at Seaford, so I've taken the opportunity to take a shot of the library.

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Tops are off

we've consulted staff, we've consulted the customers...
and the consensus is...
Tops are off!
Off with those dust covers, up with the shelving and forward with the way we display our book stock.
Now we just have to do the rest of the collection!

Monday, August 10, 2009

School Services Librarian

New School Services Library Officer
(Karla) commenced today!

Friday, August 07, 2009

Aerial

no wonder the picture was breaking up....
someone's been on the roof and damaged the aerial (and the posts supporting the bird netting). We've contacted the aerial contractors and all should be fixed soon!

Book Week prep...

The theme for Book Week 2009 is 'Book Safari' and the preparations have commenced. The 'safari hunt' has been put in place and now it is up to the 'library explorers' to find the clues to complete the trail. The library can be quite a jungle but if the explorers are successful then they can claim the rewards.

Shelving

the dust covers are off...
Angela has removed the dust covers from a bay of shelving and raised the height of the bottom shelves. Now we have feedback forms available to customers to gauge their response ...
Will this see us removing the rest of the dust covers or return to the way things were? Stay tuned...

Monday, July 27, 2009

Photocopier

the old Canon colour photocopier has reached the end of it's service contract and so it is Goodbye! It served us well over the last 5 years with lots of copying, with very little fuss or bother. But now we bid it adieu...

Friday, July 24, 2009

High cleaning...

The high cleaning was completed last Saturday removing the dust and grime, spider webs (and spiders) and other accumulated stuff from all the high areas throughout the library. All is now 'spick and span'!

Friday, July 17, 2009

More magazine shelving...

...like we needed more magazine shelving? Apparently so! The collection was getting larger, we needed to get them off the bottom shelves, with all the rain there was a risk of flooding (well, you never know)...
Whatever the reason - we have more!

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Fire warden training

Three staff have undertaken refresher Workplace Emergency Training - Warden Course.

- and a reminder to all about emergency procedures where there is fire/smoke...
Remove people from the immediate area
Alert others and the Fire Service
Contain the fire/smoke
Evacuate the area
= RACE

New chairs

36 new chairs have arrived and been installed in the ITC and the student computer area in the library. The new chairs are height adjustable with solid frame construction and glides rather than castors. We will see how they survive after some fairly solid use by students...

Wednesday, July 08, 2009

New bins

New bins for general garbage and recycling were delivered and installed today. They are very distinctive and clearly labeled, large but not obtrusive. I'm sure we will make good use of them and do our bit for the environment!

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

Book sale

The Seaford library BOOK SALE started today. The sale includes all of the videos that the library held (as these will no longer be a collection), all debited books, magazines and CDs as well as donated items. Time to grab a bargain!

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Videos no more...

As of 1 July there are no longer any videos available for borrowing from the library. It's the end of an era. The new digital technology has supplanted the old tape system. I wonder how long it will be until the DVDs are 'old hat'!

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

New branding

Today saw the launch of the new ''Onka'' branding. There was good use made of the ''O'' (hence the abundant supply of colourful donuts), a great range of colour and SIZE and a good sprinkling of vibrancy!

Swine flu...

We may not have any cases of swine flu in the library (yet!) but we do have a lot of staff off. We're down to 50% of the regular staffing component and there are not enough casual staff to fill the vacancies. Let's hope things 'turn round' soon!

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

New Slatwall

New Slatwall panels have been installed in two areas of the library and they look great! They have replaced the tired old pin-up boards and have given the areas a real lift. It has also allowed us to display some of the collections in the acrylic storage boxes that just click on the wall.
Now, where can we put some more?...

Friday, May 29, 2009

a BIG week...

It was a big week at the library. A celebration of Library and information week, History week, National simultaneous storytime, living books, quizzes and competitions ...and this was on top of all the usual things we do!
Now that it is done and dusted we can have a good break over the weekend...

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Kettle

We have a new kettle!
...and not just any old thing. This is a glass bodied beauty that illuminates when it is boiling and then returns to it's stainless steel look when done. Gone is the old boiler...here is the replacement.
I wonder if the tea tastes any better?

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

...the return

it's been 3 weeks...
and I have returned (from leave)...
and all looks well!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Skylight stage 3

We are well into stage 3 - the curved wall! The replacement skylight has been installed but we need to have the 'gaps' filled with 'capping' tomorrow. All is going well and we should be well finished before the forecast rain arrives. Then we'll see if it leaks!...

Friday, April 17, 2009

Skylight stage 2

Stage 2 is now complete! This is the skylight that runs down the centre of the building (east to west) and is the longest length to be replaced. The final stage should commence early next week (this is the curved wall on the northern perimeter) and that should be it!

Thursday, April 09, 2009

ICT Refurb 2

The new desks were delivered and installed today! We had them bolted to the floor to ensure their stability and place in the room.
All looks sweet!

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Skylight replacement

The skylight replacement project has begun today with work commencing on the southern perimeter of the building (above the children's library). All is going well and hopefully this stage of the project will be completed tomorrow. Then we can plan the implementation of the next 2 stages...

Tuesday, April 07, 2009

ICT Refurb

The demolition has begun! We are removing all the 'old' furniture in preparation for the installation of the 'new'. We've made a start by detaching the in-built furniture on the northern wall and starting on the eastern wall. The rest is modular so it's easy. New desks arriving on Thursday.
